Adele takes the world by storm with her six year comeback
Adele Laurie Blue, more well known as Adele, has remained prevalent within the music industry for more than a decade and has continued “chasing pavements”, releasing numerous number one hits from her best-selling albums.
Kicking off her career in 2009, Adele released her debut album titled “19”, which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. Throughout the years, she has continued to drop number one hits and recently came back after six years with her new album “30”.
Adele has remained prevalent in the music industry as a female artist who shares her experiences through her music. Her career began in London, where she would post demos of her singing on the internet. Record labels took interest in her due to her wide vocal range and passion for music. Her music made its way around the U.K, as well as the world after signing with XL Records.
Adele’s new album received many different reactions as she took a whole new approach and perspective. Since the album was dedicated to her son, XL Records was concerned that it would not reach the intended audience, according to Carrie Battan, a publisher from The New Yorker. Since the majority of her listeners are all fairly young, the label worried her relatability would no longer be present.
Nevertheless, “30” has reached 185 million on-demand streams during its first week and 692,000 physical albums sold, making it the most sold album of the year so far, according to Billboard.
“I really enjoyed her new album because she incorporated so many new aspects and her range is incredible. It was dedicated to her son, and I liked how she shared that with us,” senior Jayden Emmanuel said.
In her new album, Adele includes small snippets from voicemails, addressed to her son. She chose this form of musical technique to share her experience and feelings toward her divorce and family relationship.
“She expresses her feelings in her songs, and she uses lyrics that perfectly describe what she has been through,” freshman Diana Voronia said.
Her use of meaningful lyrics and deep tones is able to reach her audience as they listen to her tell her story through her music.
Adele has notoriously produced and performed heartfelt songs regarding heartbreak, hardship, and honesty. Some of her most popular songs include “Someone Like You”, “Hello”, and “Send My Love”, where she sings about being left behind by past lovers.
“Even though I don’t resonate with some of her songs, you can really feel her music in your soul even if you can’t fully relate to it,” Emmanuel said.
As a mezzo-soprano, Adele hits notes and ranges that are not common for other female artists. “She has the ability to create a breathy, fragile head voice, but can also take her chest up high and create a strong and powerful effect,” according to voice lecturer, Narelle Yeo.
Along with her wide vocal range, Adele incorporates relatable lyrics that appeal to her audience, as it allows them to fully experience what she is feeling.
“I think she’s so popular because her music is relatable and people like listening to music that speaks to them,” freshman Ashlynne Irali said.
Adele is most known for addressing subjects that have built an image, making her loved and admired by her audiences. Although defined as a pop artist, she separates herself from other artists in her genre, as she embraces a classic and proper demeanor, according to Melissa Ruggieri from USA Today.
Even with her sincerity and glamor, Adele has faced many challenges including musical criticism and poor relationships as a well-known female artist.
“As a woman in the music industry, being accepted is kind of hard because people don’t take you as seriously, but I think she has overcome that and she’s gotten through that struggle,” Irali said.
After divorcing her ex-husband Simon Konecki, Adele had much to overcome with her music career as well as her relationship with her son. “Her new album took many by surprise as it goes through her struggles,” Battan said.
Female artists have found it difficult to freely share their feelings, as it can make them seem vulnerable within the music industry, but Adele has changed that perspective.
“I feel like as a female artist she has faced more problems and has more experiences to share than male artists,” Voronia said.
Women in the music industry have managed to work their way up in the music industry, but still struggle to find respect among others. Adele has managed to break those barriers with integrity.
“She has seen the judgment that comes upon making music and the ridicule that comes upon you, but she has managed to power through and make the best of it,” Emmanuel said.
