Hollywood puts children in danger
People do not see the negative side of fame. Fame at a young age can be strenuous to manage. People who become famous too early in their lives often are affected negatively in the future.
¨I don’t think young people should be allowed to be famous,¨ Jennette McCurdy on The Minimalists podcast said.
The former ICarly Nickelodeon star´s mom put her in child acting when she was just six years old and by the time she turned eleven, she was the main supporter of her family. Unfortunately, McCurdy struggled with anorexia at the young age of 14.
¨I quickly learned that remaining physically small for my age meant I had a better chance of booking more roles,¨ McCurdy said in People’s magazine.
Countless celebrities deal with the pressures of the media. Dejectedly for younger famous people, the stress is more invalidating from the media and the pressure from their peers.
¨[Demi Lovato] felt the pressure increase when fame started to creep into their life¨ Demi Lovato´s manager Scooter Braun said in People’s magazine.
Starting at a young age, Demi Lovato was compelled to appear and sing a certain way to appeal to their peers. That coercing from Lovato’s former manager and their parents soon led them to use alcohol and cocaine as a coping mechanism. They came out with a song called ¨Sober¨ after six years of sobriety, revealing they had relapsed. Sadly,Lovato was then rushed to the hospital due to an overdose on heroin on July 24th, 2018.
¨Too much of anything is going to kill you,” Lovato said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Another way children are being negatively impacted by fame is child exploitation. Child exploitation has been a problem in Hollywood for longer than it seems, as many stars have only recently begun to speak up about the abuse they suffered as children in the industry.
¨I have always had so many different emotions, and I didn’t know how to control them quite well,¨Selena Gomez told Allure.
When Gomez was ten years old, she began acting, and at the age of fourteen, she was Disney Channel’s biggest star.
While Gomez was struggling with multiple health matters, such as her lupus and undergoing a kidney transplant, she was still a scapegoat for public inspection. Gomez felt compelled throughout her early career to be overtly sexual in music videos.
“My personal life was out everywhere. It felt very claustrophobic, and I just felt very trapped, ” Gomez said.
Thankfully, foundations like the BizParentz Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to protecting professional child performers, are dedicated to helping child stars become healthy and successful adults. BizParentz works with parents, government, and industry organizations to advocate for children in the entertainment industry while supporting and educating parents.
