Sophomore goalkeeper Benjamin Sandoval was feeling prepared and hopeful before playing long-time rivals the Porter Ridge Pirates on Wednesday night.

“I’m feeling pretty good. I’m feeling pretty hyped up. I’m feeling pretty good about this game. If we play well, we’ll definitely go home feeling happy I think,” Sandoval said in a pre-game interview.

The Spartans went in aggressive but kept it clean and worked together to protect Sandoval in goal. Both teams held down defense the entirety of the first half and the score was 0-0 at halftime.

Both the Pirates and Spartans fought hard and kept the score 0-0 in the next forty minutes of playing time. The boys were forced into overtime for one of the teams to attempt the win.

“We went into overtime again, which is not always easy after playing Monday night [because it’s] twenty more minutes, but the boys played hard, they played together, we took our chances, and we had them,” assistant coach Jordan Beighle said.

With four minutes left in the first ten of overtime, junior Vincent Gallardo scored for the Spartans.

“I’m very proud of Vinny. Vinny played his heart out and he played amazing for us,” Sandavol said.

This win was important for this varsity team to secure their playoff spot and end the regular season with a dub.

“We knew we had to win that game to get a better seed and a fourth place finish. Looking at records, that’s the best finish we’ve had in twelve plus years in conference. It was a really tough game, a rivalry game as well, but the boys responded,” head coach Kash Knight said.
