Homecoming week havoc

Spartan spirit week is in full swing as the homecoming game approaches

Students give their take on the changes to homecoming during Covid. Many kids are excited for normal school activities to be starting again.

Homecoming week for the 2020-2021 school year is approaching quickly. The homecoming game will be played against the Monroe Redhawks at SV’s brand new stadium.

“The challenge with Covid restrictions is making sure we are very organized and communication is expedient and timely. It is great for building these leadership skills for future events and life skills as well,” Student Council advisor Jennifer Goodson said.

With COVID-19 restrictions,  a limited number of students and family members will be able to attend the third varsity football game of the season.

“I’m excited for it, but I wish that all the student body would be able to come,” senior Anna Bulla said.

Even with the pandemic, Stuco has created a student-centered celebration. “We really did not focus on a theme this year since there will not be a dance; our focus is on getting the student body involved in a typical event even with restrictions,” Goodson said.

Court nominees created individual videos on things they are involved at SV and what their personal favorite thing is about “Covid school.”

“The differences this year are definitely that it was a weird [kind of] way to be nominated; normally you don’t have to make videos or anything you just [kind of] vote,” Bulla said.

Although the traditional Homecoming dance was cancelled due to social distancing, the court will still be recognized at the Homecoming game.

“I am sad that there’s no dance, but I am excited to still see my friends,” freshman Jack Dehart said.

Without a dance, Spartans plan to dress up for the Homecoming game to show school spirit.

“I’m [kind of] excited to just dress up for the game and take pictures with my friends,” junior Lily Harvey said.

Although administration cancelled after-school celebrations due to COVID-19, Spirit Week is in full swing.

Each of the Plan B groups are participating in spirit activities on their respective in-person attendance dates. On Monday and Wednesday, students are “Going on a Trip” as freshmen journey to Woodstock, sophomores attend a rodeo, juniors brave a safari, and seniors bid Aloha to Hawaii.

Tuesdays and Thursdays bring the traditional ¨Color War” with freshmen wearing gray while sophomores, juniors, and seniors sport maroon, white, and black, respectively.

Students can locate all of the information regarding Homecoming, the game, and Spirit Week on the Sun Valley Student Council instagram page @sunvalleystudentcouncil. This will be the first Homecoming game in the new stadium, and SV is ready to take on the Redhawks at 7:00 on Friday, March 19.
