“I said I love you, didn’t know what it meant,”
Everyone has a set of talents and hobbies: home school student Josh Nuzum took his and ran with it. What started as a simple hobby turned into the beauty that can be found in his first song released to the public, “Dance In The Starlight.”
“I’ve been in music for almost 10 years now. I started taking it more seriously when I was about 12; I learned music theory and more advanced guitar stuff,” Nuzum said.
Nuzum has a specific sound that becomes apparent when you listen to either his song or his live performances at Southbrook Church. He takes a very expressive approach to his sound which has an alternative pop sound to it.
“I took inspiration from Ed Sheeran’s writing more so than his direct style, and a little of Shawn Mendes as well as Durmont Kennedy,”Nuzum said.
Nuzum has only been singing publicly for a year. He started in April 2020 when he was given a microphone at a church service and asked to sing accompaniment. Only six months after his start, he traveled to Nashville.
“My friend Ben Damron pitched the idea to record a cover of JP Saxe’s ‘The Few Things’. In Nashville, however, he encouraged me to write my own song. I was hesitant at first, but after a lot of praying and thinking I decided that it wouldn’t make sense to not take advantage of this opportunity,” Nuzum said.
“We were there for four days and had three different session musicians come and record vocals, cello and electric guitar. First, we started with the acoustic guitar track then added some contemporary drums, then had Paul Nelson record the cello tracks. Paul has recorded with a bunch of huge names like Paul McCartney and Big Daddy Weave,” Nuzum said.
Nuzum wrote “Dance In The Starlight” with a theme he has wanted to incorporate in a song for years.
“I have always been fascinated by the idea of the starlight, and I really wanted to write a song about it. I knew from the start that the hook was going to be ‘Dance in the Starlight’. This wasn’t written from personal experience, but instead the track is written as a story of two people watching the stars,” said Nuzum.
Nuzum’s single has amassed 16,000 streams on Spotify and has been added to several wedding playlists. Moving forward Nuzum hopes to continue recording music and to find his passion in this next year whether it be recording music or producing music.
