Global Warmings contributes to shifts in Weather

Hotter temperatures, excessive rain, and extreme weather events have all become prominent dangers because of global warming.

The 85-year record for hottest summer has been beaten this year. Records have shown that the 74.01 °F temperature average for the 2021 summer surpassed that of the 74.00°F record that was set in 1936 during the Dust Bowl. The temperatures this summer have shown to be 2.6 degrees higher than the long term average.

High temperatures have affected many people across the US, leading them to not be able to enjoy their time outside.

“I feel like [the high temperatures] affected me this summer when it came to going outside because I couldn’t stay outside for that long because I would overheat and it made it harder to enjoy being outside,” sophomore Leah Blount said.

Numerous people have felt a significant rise in temperatures as the summers move forward.“I feel like lately it’s been much hotter compared to past summers when I was younger and in elementary school,” Blount said.

Besides rising temperatures, severe weather events such as hurricanes and thunderstorms have become more common.

“This year my grandma, who lives in Florida, was experiencing a lot of flooding,” sophomore Dinara Aydinova said.

Excessive rain has also become a problem, causing people to cancel plans, postpone events, and stay indoors.

“I wasn’t able to go outside as much this year because it rained so much,” Aydinova said.

The excessive rain has also led to many other issues such as flooding. “[Because of the excessive rain] my yard got a little flooded and it also caused a lot of standing water, which made it hard to move the cars around,” Blount said.

After having to deal with the high temperatures for the majority of the 2021 summer, many people devised to deal with the heat to let themselves enjoy the season.

“[Normally I would just stay inside], now I have a personal fan that I use,” freshman Raneem Hammouda said.

Thousands of people have also found ways to battle the extreme rain, such as purchasing ponchos and raincoats or simply just bringing an umbrella.

“[Other than staying inside] I would bring an umbrella with me whenever I would go out,” Hammouda said.

Due to global warming having a huge impact over this summer, many people have begun to wonder what some main contributing factors to global warming are.

“[I think] factories and gas emissions are a huge contributor to global warming,” Blount said.

What people do almost everyday could be adding to the effects of global warming.

“Traveling in cars too long, especially to long-distance places, is something I do often [that can be adding to global warming],” Aydinova said.

While global warming’s effects are becoming more prominent, staying aware of weather events and things people do in their everyday lives that may contribute to global warming remains important.
