Social media’s new skin care craze has teens putting away their Claire’s lip glosses in favor of anti-aging products.
Despite the popularity of the trend promoted by many online influencers, dermatologists warn about the dangers of using advanced skin care products on young skin.
Dr. Papantoniou, a dermatologist, expresses that teens see their favorite influencers use products like retinol and do not fully understand what retinol is or what it does.
“Influencers glamorize viral products and buzzwords, but teens don’t understand their impact on sensitive skin,” Papantoniou said.
When it comes to the physical damage of their skin, some teens have different thoughts than those obsessed.
“I feel like when it comes to skin, teens should be listening to the people who are professionals, and not worry about aging products,” junior Erin Bosndk said.
Along with damaging their skin, some teens are worried about what type of message this trend is trying to send.
“They’re influencers and everyone wants to be like them and have the same products as them, and it makes teens think they have to have these things to be pretty,” sophomore Jiselle Garcia said.
With influencers and insecurities, no one wonders how teens get so caught up in the skin care craze.
