On the week of May 3, the Spartans took on the Cuthbertson Cavaliers, losing both games 5-2 and 5-3.

The Spartans played the third game of the season and are expecting to play 10 more games this year after having their season cut short last year due to Covid.

“Although we did start a whole month late and still have strict rules, I’m definitely excited to be playing with my best friends again for the last time,” senior Jacob Bowman said.

The games against Cuthbertson were challenging ones coming off of a two game winning streak, the Spartans fell to the Cavs 5-2.

“We faced a very talented team, and [senior] Derek Vartanian pitched amazing and the defense played amazing, but we did struggle to execute the chances we had,  which cost us runs and situations,” head coach Jeffery Stack said.

Although the Spartans were on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the fourth inning, the Cavs came back with five runs.

“The turning point of the game was at the bottom of the sixth inning when we let Cuthbertson have five runs with only two outs; we just needed that third out to prevent that, but, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case,” junior Mason Tinsley said.

The team fell short due to few errors and mistakes

“The only gripe that I had was the execution and that was it, either getting a bunt down or executing a base running play properly,” said Stack.

Despite the outcome, the Spartans controlled  the beginning of the game.

“At the beginning of the game we started with high energy, which was really good and we also were competing and pitching really well. Derek had a great game, but we couldn’t score runs when runners were on base,” said Tinsley.

The Spartans came up short again in game two against the Cavs, losing 5-3. Though Tuesday was a close game all throughout until the last few innings, in the second game the Cavs dominated on friday.

“They were better than us on Friday[…]There is no one reason or two reason why we lost; they simply just outplayed us. We didn’t hit the ball well; we didn’t play defense very well,” said Stack.

Although they lost, the Spartans still have a determined mindset for the season.

“We are like a brotherhood, and I believe we have one of the strongest bonds a team could have,” said Bowman.

The Spartans also played the Parkwood Rebels on May 11. The boys made a comeback with a 10-2 win, making their record 3-2.

“We won because of how we fixed our mistakes from the Cuthbertson games. We started executing a lot more plays this game than from the last game, and as well as the energy from the students really helped,” said Stack.

The Spartans’ next game is tomorrow (Tuesday, May 18th) at home against the Weddington Warriors.
